Nephrologist, Okwuonu selected among emerging leaders for global assignment on kidney treatment

Dr Chimezie Okwuonu the immediate past Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Abia State chapter, is among one of the only two Africans selected for Emerging Leaders Programme by the International Society of Nephrology.

Dr Okwuonu in a statement made available to newsmen described the development as “a recognition of possibilities that exist in this part of the globe”.

The Abia-born Kidney expert who has played a vital role as a nephrology of kidney transplants at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Umuahia as a colonist member of the transplant team, said it only 13 person from the whole world made the list.

Dr Okwuonu said , “It is a rare opportunity and privilege” saying he would not toy with but leverage on to further advance solution for kidney-related ailments.

The program, which is an initiative of the International Society of Nephrology, aims to equip doctor to participate in international conferences, leadership programs sponsored by Harvard University, and global health care, collaboration, and implementation research.

“It also improves capacity for local impact in addressing prevailing health needs of the region.”

He said: “Only two persons were selected from Africa, and 13 people all over the world. I’m not taking the opportunity for granted, but will maximize it to give hope to kidney disease patients.”

Speaking further, Dr Okwuonu said this would be the suitable time to encourage the health sector in the state, adding that his members at the FMC aims to end overseas medical tourism by reducing the price for Nigerian patients.

“This is a big addition to the Abia health system. The training from this program will impart positively to health care in Abia State especially in the area of international collaboration, strengthening health systems and improved kidney care delivery and research. It is indeed an honour for an Abia-born Kidney expert to be so internationally recognized and high lighted.”
