The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says Nigerians want the government to explain how money was spent to help the textile industry. The NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, mentioned this at a conference in Abuja. He emphasized the importance of the textile sector for creating jobs and boosting the economy.”
Looking back at previous attempts to improve the sector, he questioned how effective the money allocated to revive the cotton, textile, and garment sub-sector was.
The NLC President questioned the use of the funds, asking if they were accessed or mismanaged. He said Nigerians want to know why the sector is still struggling despite the funds allocated to it.
Speaking on the conference theme, “Building Union Power for Sustainable Industrialization and the Future of Work,” Ajaero stressed the need to strengthen trade unions to tackle challenges effectively. He encouraged union members to grasp the theme’s importance in overcoming obstacles to industrial growth and economic prosperity.
Praising the strength of trade unions, Ajaero applauded NUTGTWN’s dedication to improving the lives of its members and all workers. He emphasized the important role trade unions play in pushing for policies that benefit Nigerian workers.
Meanwhile, Senator Adams Oshiomole advised labor leaders to closely monitor how the government implements its industrial policies to ensure they are worthwhile. He emphasized the importance of labor unions holding the government accountable and ensuring policies are implemented effectively for the benefit.
Oshiomhole suggested that labor leaders should investigate the issues in the textile industry to find lasting solutions. He emphasized the need for labor leaders to unite and demand accountability from the government with a strong and clear voice
Similarly, NUTGTWN President, Mr. John Adaji, emphasized the importance of a working textile industry in reducing unemployment and promoting steady economic growth. He also pointed out the negative effects of smuggling and importing textile products without regulation, and called for united efforts to tackle these issues.
