NiMet, UK firm sign MoU to promote quality services

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency and Varysian Limited, a weather and climate services company with headquarters in the United Kingdom, have inked a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate in important areas that will enhance the agency’s service delivery.

Prof. Charles Anosike, the director general of NiMet, stated during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday that the collaboration will further solidify the organization’s dedication to offering top-notch weather and climate information services to Nigerians and the different business sectors it serves.

“We are happy to be partnering Varysian Limited. Their expertise is in enhancing partnership and collaboration between National Meteorological & Hydrological Services and other industry stakeholders, through world-class events, data, and research.

“The MoU covers a lot of areas but most importantly, we will prioritize operationalizing capacity development of our staff in marine meteorology, instituting a mentorship programme for our staff with global weather and climate services organizations, and improving our capacity in parametric weather insurance,” Prof. Anosike said.

Barr. Shola Gabriel, the Executive Director of Legal Services of NiMet, as well as additional agency personnel were in attendance.

Anosike reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to enhancing service delivery made in January at the start of a three-day NiMet management retreat in Abuja.

“The overriding objective of the 2024 NiMet management retreat is to strengthen collaborative relationships amongst staff of the agency. It’s time to dismantle the imaginary walls and silos built internally over the years, which has been stifling productivity.

“The retreat will give us all a good understanding of the work NiMet does. The science of meteorology should be treated and handled with all seriousness because of its importance and impact on lives, properties, and the economy.”
