NMA Elects New Leaders: President Bala Audu And Secretary General Ben Egbo

Bala Audu, a renowned professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, has been elected as the new President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). He will lead the association for the next two years, following his election at the annual delegates meeting in Calabar, Cross River State.

Additionally, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, founder of the Benjamin Olowojebutu Foundation, was elected as Vice President, while other officials elected include Usha Anenga as Second Vice President, Ben Egbo as Secretary General, and others who will serve in various capacities, including treasurer, financial secretary, and national publicity secretary.

“The delegates drawn from NMA branches in the country elected new officers to lead the NMA for the next two years,” the association mentioned.

The newly elected leaders of the NMA will be in charge of the association’s activities from 2024 to 2026, at which point a new leadership cycle will begin. It is anticipated that each term within the NMA will last for a period of two years.

During the most recent election, Uche Ojinmah, a consultant dermatologist, was elected as president of the association alongside several other members.

The recently appointed president of the NMA graduated from the University of Maiduguri in Medicine in 1988. He pursued further studies at the University of London, where he obtained a master’s degree in 1994 and became a fellow in obstetrics and gynaecology in 1997.

He also completed a program in Hospital Administration and Health Services at the National Institute of Public Health in Japan in 2008.

Prior to his role as the provost of the College of Medical Sciences at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi in 2017, Audu worked at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Subsequently, he was appointed as the vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences in Azare, Bauchi state. Audu is recognized for his dedication to training young doctors in obstetrics and his extensive research on cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment.
