Wakadaily learnt that, the regulator gave the states the nod to have independent electricity regulatory commissions.

NERC also gave them approval to generate, transmit, distribute, and regulate electricity in their areas.

Sanusi Garba, the NERC Chairman, said while addressing members of the Senate Committee on Power during an oversight visit to his office on Tuesday, disclosed that the three states could now take over completely to regulate tariffs and power supply within their jurisdictions.

Garba said, NERC would take responsibility for regulating such transactions, where those states needs to buy power from the national grid, stressing that states would decide the cost of one kilowatt-hour of electricity in their states according to the band.

The NERC said it had issued orders to transfer regulatory oversight of the electricity market in the three states from the commission to their regulatory bodies, according to the news gathered on Monday and Tuesday.

The NERC said, this complied with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended).
