One person has drowned and forty nine others rescued in a boat accident at Nansa village in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday morning.

He said, “The unfortunate incident occurred at about 10am in the morning on Saturday in Kwatu via Zumba and I have received a detailed report about it.”

The Director General of the agency, Ibrahim Inga, stated that “The boat had loaded passengers, foodstuff, other farm produce and livestock and they were on their way to the weekly market in the area from Nansa village by the river bank and upstream of Shiroro Hydro Power Dam heading towards Kwata Saturday market at Zumba when the incident occurred.

One person drowned while one other got injured, adding that the search and rescue operation was very slow as the area of the incident was a bandit enclave and rescuers were afraid of being kidnapped,” Inga noted.
