Osun government reads riot act to dog owners

The Osun state government has warned dog owners to tame their dogs or face prosecution.

This is coming few days after two Alsatian dogs jumped out of a building around Halleluyah Area of Ido-Osun, Osun State, and grabbed a baby at the mother’s back killing her and also attacked the woman who tried to rescue her child.

An eyewitness said, “the dogs attacked the nursing mother and seized her baby, the woman who made an attempt to rescue the baby, was also attacked and injured by the dogs.

“We all watched helplessly. The dogs, we were told, jumped out of a building that is not currently inhabited by anyone and seized the baby said to be about five months strapped to the back by the mother, and battered her.”

Worried by the development, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Tola Faseru, issued the warning while meeting with dog breeders, owners and veterinary outfits in the state.

He said: “Henceforth, dog owners will face necessary disciplinary action in line with the dictates of the law if any of their dogs is found culpable.

“The rate at which unlicensed dogs roam the streets aimlessly is unfortunate.

“It is now compulsory for all veterinary outfits to ensure that they are registered with the state government.

“Similarly, all dogs must get anti-rabies vaccination certificate, which must be duly signed by a certified veterinarian,” he said
