A bill that will require prospective couples to get medical testing for HIV, hepatitis, and sickle cell anemia prior to marriage was enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly.
Monday’s plenary session, chaired by Speaker Rt. Hon. Ismail Falgore, saw the passage of the law.
After discussions in the Committee of the Whole House, the bill was passed on its third reading, which was read by Nasiru Magaji, the Deputy Clerk.
According to the Assembly, a decision is a major step in the right direction toward preserving public health and halting the spread of deadly illnesses.
Majority Leader Lawan Hussein declared that anyone who intends to be married needs to get checked out medically to make sure they don’t have any of the problems listed above.
Hussein stressed that the measure was brought up since many people in the state are affected by health problems like HIV, which can be transmitted through misinformed marriages.
This bill would reduce the frequency of life-threatening illnesses in Kano State proactively if it were to become law.
