Retired soldier hang himself to death in Benue

A retired soldier, identified as Francis Dooga, reportedly committed suside within his compound opposite St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Nyiniongun, a small community of Makurdi, the capital city of Benue State.

The 72-year-old was said to have hang himself on a tree without leaving a note on Sunday evening.

A resident of the community who spoke with newsmen said none of the retired soldier’s family members was around when he took his life.

The source said, “It was when one of the family members came in around 6:00 p.m. yesterday (Sunday) that he saw the body of the retiree dangling on a tree within the house that he raised the alarm.

“It was the alarm that drew the attention of neighbours to the house.”

Another resident of the community who  explain further noted that the retired soldier, also know as ‘old soldier’ had earlier lament of hardship.

Some claimed that the retired soldier committed suside due to delay of pension.

However, the family members can’t explain to journalist why the retired soldier committed suside.

Confirming the incident, the state command spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, in a berf message, said, ‘We have the report and investigation is ongoing.”
