Nigerians have been urged by the Chief Whip of the Senate Chamber, Mohammed Ali Ndume to put aside their differences and band together in order to combat our country’s enemies.
Speaking in honor of the seventeen officers and soldiers from Delta State who lost their lives while serving, he made this statement yesterday at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja. Speaking on Thursday, Ndume gave an interview.
In a recent gesture of patriotism, President Bola Tinubu honored the officers and soldiers who gave their lives in Okuama, Delta State, approximately two weeks ago. The Senate Chief Whip asked Nigerians to follow Tinubu’s example.
While commending Tinubu for his actions, Ndume said, “I commend President Bola Tinubu for attending the funeral of the soldiers slain at Okuama and for awarding their children full scholarships, as well as presenting houses to their survivors.
“Every Nigerian should commend this patriotic and respectful gesture. Nobody could deserve it more. Our Armed Forces are the guarantors of the Nigerian state and our last defence against the forces of disunity and impunity.
“I hope we can put aside our political differences and stand together as one in honour of our fallen heroes.
“The Chief of Defence Staff should also posthumously award the departed soldiers’ medals for bravery and courage under fire.”
During the funeral of the fallen military soldiers, President Tinubu made public his administration’s plan to offer housing and scholarships to the deceased’s wards, as well as to bestow posthumous National Honour Awards upon them.
On March 17, while on a peace mission to Okuama in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, the 17 officers lost their lives.
While the 13 troops were given the Officer of the Federal Republic Medal, President Tinubu announced that the four officers had been granted the Member of the Order of Niger (MON).
He said, “Each man now belongs to the hallowed list of servicemen and women who defended our country and protected their fellow Nigerians, not minding the risk to their own lives.”
