On Wednesday, the South African police disclose the arrest of six suspects for the killing of a footballer, named Luke Fleurs, who played for popular Johannesburg club, Kaizer Chiefs.
The defender was shot last week at the gas station as he was refilling his car in a northwest suburb of the city, over a recent incident that shocked the crime -ridden nation.
“Police have arrested six suspects for the alleged hijacking and murder,” police spokesman, Mavela Masondo (SAPS), said.
It was said that the 27-year old defender was waiting to be served at a petrol station in his Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI when he was confronted by two men, who ordered him out of the vehicle at gunpoint, as he got out of his car, they shot him before driving away with his car.
The spokesman, said that this arrests was made on Wednesday, in Johannesburg southwestern township of Soweto — two days after detectives recovered the deceased car.
The investigators believed that this suspects are part of a crime group responsible for other car hijackings in Johannesburg’s Gauteng province.
“The search for more suspects is continues,” Masondo said.
South Africa has suffered from a high violent crime rate, a key political issue ahead of general elections in May, with opposition parties pointing to the government’s perceived failure.
The country has recorded over 84 murders between October and December, according to official figures.
