The World Health Organisation has commended the Delta State Government for its efforts towards universal health coverage in the state.

On Monday, during a roadshow in commemoration of 2024 World Health Day in Asaba, the Delta State capital, the state coordinator of WHO, Dr Faith Ireye, in a goodwill message gave the commendation.

The Coordinator said the theme for World Health Day 2024, “My Health, My Right,” was appropriate to recall how WHO increased the rights of the people through health.

She said, “Every year, World Health Day is celebrated on April 7. As we gather today to commemorate World Health Day 2024, I extend my warmest greetings to the state, partners, and stakeholders for their enthusiasm and support.

“As we reflect on public health successes that have improved the quality of life of our people during the last seven decades and summoned the energy to tackle the health challenges of the next 75 years.

“We appreciate the state’s efforts to accelerate progress towards Universal Health Coverage. The reforms in health policies and revamping legislative and regulatory frameworks, including contributory health insurance schemes to reduce out-of-pocket health expenditures.

“WHO, in collaboration with the state and partners, have made significant progress in ensuring better health outcomes for our people over the past decades.

“More mothers and children are surviving today than before. In the last two decades, the life expectancy of our women has increased. The maternal mortality ratio has decreased, and the number of children dying before the age of five has reduced by 50% from 2000 to 2017.

“The last decade saw a decrease in number of new HIV infections and AIDs-related deaths and in the number of TB deaths. Several diseases, including polio, guinea worm disease, as well as maternal and neonatal tetanus, are on the verge of eradication and elimination.

“In Delta State, we are privileged to witness the tireless efforts of healthcare professionals, policymakers, and individuals alike.”

Faith stated that through partnership and dedication, WHO has continued to make strides towards achieving the goals outlined in the pursuit of universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals.

However, She noted that health is not only a fundamental human right but also central to peace and prosperity.
