During a plenary held at the state house of Assembly on Monday 26th February, 2024, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bilyaminu Moriki and six other lawmakers have suspended eight lawmakers for allegedly plotting to impeach the Speaker of the house last Thursday.
The majority leader, Hon. Muhammad Mazawaje, moved the motion to suspend the legislators, claiming that the members had been charged with trespassing into the offices of the House clerk and sergeant at arms and destroying other items at the assembly complex.
The leader of the house characterized the eight lawmakers’ meeting last Thursday as unlawful, emphasizing that their actions in demolishing some offices of assembly in order to hold an unauthorized meeting violated parliamentary procedures.
The eight members suspended by the House are: Hon Sani Abdullahi, Hon Nasiru Mar, Hon Bashir Abubakar, Hon. Aminu Keta, Hon. Faruk Musa Dosara, Hon. Bashir Aliyu, Hon. Ibrahim T. Tukur and Hon. Shamsuddeen Hassan.
Last Thursday, at their meeting, the eight members and a few more, led by the person they referred to as the Speaker Pro-Tempo, suspended House Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki and ordered the House to be adjourned indefinitely.
In their individual remarks during Monday’s session, the six legislators also charged that a few powerful politicians from outside the state were funding the eight lawmakers in an attempt to damage the House’s reputation and that of Governor Dauda Lawal’s government.
Additionally, they urged the state’s populace and the constituents of the impacted members to ignore the actions of the other seventeen lawmakers and also disregard all rumors about the speaker of the house being suspended.
