State Police is an illusion and potential cause for Disorder- Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker and social critic, has characterized the proposed creation of state police in the country as both an illusion and a potential cause for disorder.

Sani stated this on his X handle in the early hours of February 19th, 2024.

Following an emergency meeting between President Bola Tinubu and state governors at the Aso Rock Villa, the Federal Government recently hinted at the possibility of adopting state police.

The meeting was convened in response to the recent surge in food prices, economic challenges, and instances of insecurity across the nation.

In response to this, the former lawmaker expressed concern that state police could potentially become an armed faction of each state’s ruling party.

He stated, “The state police will be used by the governors to persecute the opposition,to harass ‘non indigenes’,to rig elections and to counter the federal police in cases of conflict of interest between the federal government and the state.

“Most of the state ruling party thugs will be recruited into the state police,” he added.
