Tinubu writes senate, proposing new salaries for judicial officers

The Senate has received an executive bill from President Bola Tinubu that aims to provide judicial personnel with additional pay, benefits, and allowances.

A letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, conveyed the President’s request.

President Tinubu stated in the letter that the executive bill “Judicial office holders, salaries and allowances, etc., bill 2024” will create a new legal framework for judicial officers’ compensation in order to enhance their welfare.

The President said the bill would strengthen the Nigerian judiciary’s potential for independence, stating that, “The judicial office holders, salaries and allowances, etc, bill 2024 seeks to prescribe salaries, allowances, and benefits for judicial officers to end the prolonged stagnation in their remuneration and to reflect contemporary social economic realities.

“The bill which establishes a new legal framework for the remuneration of judicial officers will also ensure significant improvement in the welfare capacity and independence of the judiciary,” Tinubu said in the letter.

“While I hope that the judicial office holders, salaries and allowances, etc, bill 2024 will be carefully, yet expeditiously considered and passed by the senate.

“Please accept, distinguish senate president, and distinguish senators the assurances of my highest esteem.”

Senator Mohammed Monguno of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Borno North and Senator Sani Musa of the APC from Niger East, who lead the committees on judiciary, human rights, and legal matters, were given the bill by Senate President Senator Akpabio, with instructions to report back in two weeks.
