Nasarawa labour seeks payment of minimum wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its Nasarawa State counterpart, the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have asked Governor Abdullahi Sule to enact the N30,000 national minimum wage on workers who are classified as seventh-grade and above.

The governor was also urged by the two bodies to promote public employees who had done exceptional work.

In their remarks commemorating the 2024 May Day celebration in Lafia, Comrade Ayuba Oko, the chairman of the NLC, and Mohammed Doma, the head of the TUC, made the call.

In order for Governor Sule to be able to enact the N30,000 minimum wage, the two unions pleaded with the governor to put pressure on the committee, which is led by Deputy Governor Emmanuel Akabe, to submit its findings.

Although they applauded the governor for bringing government servants who had been stagnant for years up to date, they requested him to share the data for 2018 through 2023 and 2024 in accordance with that.

In particular, the NLC chairman asked the governor to order the release of monies for individuals whose promotions had already been granted.

In addition, he made a plea to the state government to expedite the state’s pay award for workers, which had previously been approved by the federal government.

He applauded the state government for implementing policies to mitigate the impact of the state’s elimination of fuel subsidies.

He claimed that the distribution of food to those in need and the payment of N10,000.00 to each state civil servant and N5,000.00 to each retiree as palliative care were positive moves.

However, he asserted that in order to solve the transportation issues that workers are having as a result of the rise in transportation costs, labor unions need buses.
