CJN calls on judges to abide by and defend the law.

Judge Olukayode Ariwoola, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, has advised judges to face their responsibilities without fear.

In particular, he assigned them the responsibility of defending and safeguarding the rule of law while also prioritizing their integrity and being unwavering in the face of enormous obstacles.

At the National Judicial Institute in Abuja on Monday, during the introduction program for recently appointed judges of the superior courts of record, Ariwoola made the call.

Speaking through Justice Jummai Hannatu Sankey, Ariwoola gave the newly appointed justices advice that stressed humility in acknowledging their limitations as well as seeking help and direction from other judges while also seeking education.

He said, “You will often face complex cases that will also come with ethical dilemmas, you will occasionally be presented with cases that require you to make difficult decisions but always remember that Justice is not a destination to be arrived at with fanfare and parades or accolades but a continuous pursuit to which you must not be afraid to stay the course on the side of fairness and integrity.

“You must remain steadfast in the face of whatever challenges that may arise by upholding and protecting the rule of law, your integrity and that of the judiciary.”

He asserted that this had a profound effect on people’s lives, communities, and society at large.

Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi, the NJI Administrator, advised the new judges to be firm and follow the path of justice and integrity in his welcome speech.

“You have become persons who have subordinated or given up their personal desires and aspirations to become committed to addressing injustice, protecting the rule of law, promoting equality before the law and human rights of the people of our dear country Nigeria”, he said
