Starlink, the satellite internet service, will partners with e-commerce firm, Jumia Technologies AG to expand it stalite broadband services in Africa.
Hisham El Gabry, Jumia Chief Commercial Officer, in an interview, said the e-commerce company will sell Starlink’s satellite terminals and other kits in some African nations, starting with Nigeria in coming weeks.
Gabry said: “We have seen Starlink do these type of deals in Southeast Asia and South America, and now Africa will also have the opportunity to access the fast-speed internet services.
“The plan is to start selling through our sites and agents in Nigeria this month, and then Kenya.”
Recall that Twitter post by its parent company, SpaceX owned by billionaire Elon Musk, said “Starlink is now available in Nigeria – the first African country to receive service.”
In February, Nigeria became the first African country to receive Starlink services.
The partnership with Jumia will help Starlink sell terminals in areas that lack formal addresses and city mapping.
Starlink one-off installation and hardware cost N274,098, while subsequent subscription is N19,260/month, the shipping times are currently estimated to be 1 to 2 weeks from order.
