The Labour Party’s national convention, which took place in Anambra on Wednesday, has been denounced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
This was said in Abuja on Thursday by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi.
Oyekanmi stated that INEC did not oversee the convention’s conduct, although he could not elaborate on why this was the case.
The LP National Legal Adviser, Mr. Kehinde Edun, addressed reporters over the venue change and said that the party had notified INEC of the new location and date.
The LP moved the national convention to Nnewi, Anambra State, on Tuesday from Umuahia, Abia.
“No, it is holding in Anambra. Nnewi, to be precise, not Umuahia in Abia State again. In fact, Umuahia was not even the first venue we chose. Benin was the first choice before we changed to Umuahia and now Nnewi.
“So, we are at liberty to pick any venue of our choice. We only need to inform INEC about the change in venue and the time,” Edun said
Political parties are required under Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 to provide INEC with at least 21 days’ notice of any convention, congress, conference, or gathering.
This entails electing members of its executive committees and other governing bodies, nominating candidates, and holding the convention or meeting called for the “merger.”
