Mohbad’s toxicology result is finally ready

There is strong evidence suggesting that the Lagos State Government has obtained the toxicology test results to establish the cause of death of the late music artist Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad.

These results have been handed over to the police authorities for further investigation.

It is worth stating that Mohbad’s death at the age of 27 on September 12, 2023, has sparked debates and disagreements on social media regarding the circumstances surrounding his passing.

Mohbad, who was previously signed to Marlian Music, a record label owned by Naira Marley, departed from the label in February 2022.

On September 18, 2023, the Lagos State Police Command established a special investigation team consisting of 13 members to look into the death of the singer.

As a result of his death, Naira Marley and Balogun Eletu, better known as Sam Larry, were arrested by the police. However, they were later released on bail while awaiting trial. On September 21, 2023, the singer’s body was exhumed for an autopsy.

The coroner’s court in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State stated in November 2023 that the external examination of the deceased’s body had been completed, while the toxicology test focused on the internal body.

The toxicology test was conducted in the United States of America. According to an anonymous source familiar with the case from the state government, the test results were sent to the state DNA and Forensic Centre last week.

The source said, “The toxicology test was ready and transmitted to the police last week.

“We projected 10 weeks from the outset but it came in before then. It was received by the DNA and Forensic Centre last week and has been sent to the police.”

Additionally, a different source within the Lagos State Police Command, who cannot be named as they do not have permission to speak to the media, verified that they have received the outcome.

According to the source; “The toxicology report is with us. It arrived on Monday but it is medical jargon for us. We don’t understand what it is. So it has been sent to the pathologist that carried out the autopsy to analyse and interpret it.”

At the moment, there has been no response from Lagos State Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro, SAN, and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, to the messages sent to them.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, is also unavailable for comment. Earlier, Richard Somiari, the Director of Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, stated that the toxicology result would be ready within the next three to four weeks.

Somiari stated during a coroner’s inquest into the singer’s death that they expected to receive the initial autopsy results in three to four weeks in order to confirm and verify the cause of death.

“We searched for multiple possibilities, to check if poison was involved in the death of Mohbad since no actual cause was mentioned,” he stated.

The forensic specialist provided reassurance to the public that there would be sufficient security measures and supervision in place for the samples during the autopsy.

“We have a place where items are stored for the safety and security of results. There is a procedure for monitoring samples moved abroad,” he stated.
