Rema wins big at MTV EMA’s Award while Burna Boy loses 3 awards

Nigerian Afrobeat singer, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, won the maiden ‘Best Afrobeats’ award at the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards.

The best Afrobeat Category was newly added to the MTV Europe Music Awards 2023, by the organizers of the show.

The pioneer nominees for the category include, French superstar, Aya Nakamura, and Nigerian musicians, Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema.

Although the award ceremony was canceled because of the Israel-Hamas war, the organisers still announced the winners on Sunday, November 6, 2023.

Rema won the “Best Afrobeats” category, while Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz won the ‘Best African Act’ category.

However, Rema and Selena Gomez’s ‘Calm Down’ lost the “Best Collaboration” category to Jung Kook and Latto’s ‘Seven’.

Grammy Award-winning singer Burna Boy, lost three categories he was nominated for, they include, including “Best Afrobeats”, “Best African Act’, and “Best Live Performer.”

This is coming barely two weeks after the singer lost lost all his seven nominations at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards.

It’s a huge lost to the singer’s camps.

American singer, Taylor Swift took the lead on the winners chart with three awards at the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards – Best Video, Best Artist and Best Live.
