Reps to probe chinese supermarket over alleged discrimination

In response to recent claims of discrimination against Nigerians at an Abuja shop run by Chinese nationals, the House of Representatives has expressed its profound concern and pledged to investigate the situation thoroughly and secure restitution if needed.

As a committee tasked with fostering positive and mutually beneficial relations between Nigeria and China, the House Committee on China/Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group disclosed the legislative position. The committee emphasised that such discriminatory practises, if substantiated by relevant authorities, go against the principles of friendship and cooperation that both Nigeria and China have worked hard to cultivate over the years.

The House spokesman/chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., and the chairman of the House Committee on China/Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group, Rep. Jaafaru Yakubu, jointly signed a statement expressing their belief in the value of international understanding and respect and denouncing prejudice and discrimination.

“Nigeria and China share a longstanding relationship characterised by mutual respect, cooperation, and friendship. Over the years, this relationship has been strengthened through various bilateral partnerships, economic collaborations, and cultural exchanges, benefiting both countries immensely.

“It is important to note that Nigeria and China have enjoyed fruitful collaborations in various sectors, including infrastructure development, trade, education, and healthcare. The ongoing partnership between our two countries has led to the completion of major projects, with many others ongoing.

“Furthermore, the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria continues to promote excellent China/Nigeria relations through socio-cultural exchanges and scholarships for many Nigerian students. These initiatives have played a significant role in enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between our two peoples.

“In response to the recent allegations, the Committee, working with other relevant committees in the House of Representatives, is committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. We will work diligently to gather all relevant information and ensure redress where necessary,” it stated.

However, the House asked all concerned parties to address the challenges with tact and an open mind in order to work toward peaceful and constructive solutions, cautioning that, “It is crucial that we do not let isolated incidents tarnish the strong bonds of friendship that exist between Nigeria and China.”

The statement added: “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with relevant stakeholders to ensure that all Nigerians are treated fairly and respectfully in Chinese establishments in Nigeria. We remain committed to promoting cultural exchange, economic cooperation, and mutual understanding between our two nations.”
