Supreme Court affirms Fubara’s election

The Supreme Court, on Thursday affirmed the election of Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

The apex court dismissed an appeal by the All Progressives Congress candidate, (APC) Toney Cole.

Cole filed to challenge the outcome of the governorship election that held in the state on March 18, 2023.

The APC candidate asked the apex court to sack Fubara as governor of the state.

He claimed that the election was marred by irregularities, adding that Fubara didn’t validly resign previous position as required by the law before the governorship election.

He also alleged that the governor continued to sign documents as the Accountant-General of Rivers State, despite been nominated as the candidate of the PDP for the election.

However, reading the lead judgment, justice Ibrahim Saulawa dismissed as lacking in merit.

The apex court held that Toney Cole failed to prove his allegations that there was non-compliance with the Electoral Act during the election.
